Geography

Mainagappally Grama Panchayat is situated in the midland region of Kerala. The Panchayat is located about 6 km east of Karunagappally on the Kollam–Alappuzha National Highway. The Panchayat covers an area of 1,970 hectares and falls within the midland zone. Areas situated more than 8 meters above sea level are included in this zone.

Mainagappally Panchayat belongs to the Onattukara agricultural region. It is a Panchayat that faces severe drinking water scarcity. The soil in the Panchayat can be classified as sandy soil. Sandy soil is commonly found throughout Karunagappally Taluk and the coastal areas of Kollam Taluk.

The total area of the Panchayat is 1,970 hectares. Mixed crops are cultivated in about 609 hectares, while mixed trees are found in approximately 360 hectares. Coconut cultivation alone occupies around 51 hectares.

Mainagappally Grama Panchayat is primarily an agricultural village. The area includes valleys, elevated regions, sloping lands, coastal plains, and marshy lands. Agriculture here mainly depends on rainfall.

Laterite soil (locally known as “vettukallu soil”) is found in most parts of the Panchayat, covering nearly 70% of the area. Coconut is the major crop cultivated across most of the land area. Paddy is traditionally cultivated in the low-lying regions.

The Krishi Bhavan (Agricultural Office) was established in the Panchayat on 1 September 1987.
